1.Gondola

A trip to Queenstown, whether it’s winter or summer, is not complete without a ride up the Skyline Gondola. The Gondola is the steepest cable car lift in the Southern Hemisphere. You’ll be carried 450 metres above Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu to the top of Bob’s Peak, where you’ll enjoy the best views in the region unfolding before your eyes. You get to experience a spectacular 220 degree panorama with breath-taking views of Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Walter and Cecil Peak and, of course, Queenstown.

The gondola operates daily from 9:00 am. The access closes at 9:00 pm for uplift from the bottom terminal and the last departure from the top terminal is when the restaurant closes.

2. Luge

If the view alone is not enticing enough, jumping on the luge will get the adrenaline pumping. When you get to the top, it’s time to take the driving seat with the gravity-fuelled Skyline Luge, the global thrill ride for all ages!

A ride on a purpose built Luge cart will put you in complete control as you take on over 800 metres of banked corners, tunnels and dippers. Once you’ve conquered the course, hop on the chairlift and do it all again, and again, and again. Gentle and leisurely or steep and adventurous, you’ll be hooked. Once is never enough!

The luge operates daily from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm (closing time can vary depending on the time of the year).

3. Lunch

Once at the top, you can enjoy a sumptuous buffet lunch at Skyline’s Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar. The menu is inspired by iconic New Zealand cuisine and infused with international influences. Stratosfare offers something for everyone, fresh seafood, great vegetarian options and saving the best till last, delectable desserts.

4. Dinner

You may choose to enjoy a sumptuous buffet dinner at Skyline’s Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar. The menu is inspired by iconic New Zealand cuisine and infused with international influences. Stratosfare offers the menu including fresh seafood, great vegetarian options and delectable desserts. This is the ideal place for that special night out and the best place in Queenstown to watch the sun go down. If you want to bag the best seat in the house, book the Premium Dining Experience to guarantee a window seat view and a complimentary house drink when you arrive.

5. Stargazing

After dinner, it’s time to watch the night sky. Explore the galaxy and learn about the stars, nebulae and planets that make up our solar system and beyond. You’ll be accompanied by knowledgeable and experienced stargazing guides at Bob’s Peak where, with some powerful telescopes, you’ll be amazed by sights not visible to the naked eye. To keep you warm you’ll have complimentary use of Canada goose-down jackets. Afterwards, enjoy a drink in the specialist theatre while checking out recent photos and videos from current NASA missions.

Getting there

The ticket exchange address is Skyline Gondola, 53 Brecon St, Queenstown 9348, New Zealand. We recommend you exchange tickets in advance at 41 Shotover Street, Queenstown (Opposite Fergburger) during high seasons. Please arrive at the base of the Gondola at least 45 minutes prior to your booked meal time to ensure sufficient time to collect your tickets, queue and take the Gondola to the top of Bob’s Peak where the restaurant is located.

Final thoughts

One of the many reasons we love Queenstown is that it is bursting at the seams with things to do. There is literally something to suit everyone. The Skyline Gondola and Luge are two of those activites that everyone should do when they visit Queenstown.

The luge experience is really well priced and we recommend you go for the largest package because you just can’t get enough once you start. Don’t stress if you haven’t done it before or you think it will be too scary. There are two tracks for you to choose from. The blue track is for your first run with quick introduction of how the luge works. It’s somewhat important to understand how to slow down and turn. It’s fair to say this is a relatively gentle ride, less of a gradient, easy bends tunnels and dips. Once you’re comfortable, you can try your luck on the red track.

Want fancy dining in a unique environment? The top of the Skyline Gondola has a cafe and a restaurant, featuring a legendary six-course buffet and which is open for lunch or dinner. From here you can dine with an amazing backdrop of the mountains and lake. Reservations are essential and there are set seating times for dining.

No matter the weather, the supplier will offer both an outdoor and indoor Stargazing Experience so you are guaranteed to enjoy your night. In case the conditions are unsuitable for the outdoor experience, you’ll be given the option to book for an outdoor tour at a later date or settle into the Moonlight Theatre with a complimentary drink and snack for the indoor experience, “A Journey into the Night Sky.” A truly unique and memorable experience, Skyline Queenstown’s Stargazing tour is a must do.
